Losing someone important can be one of the hardest things we'll ever face, and finding ways to honour their memory and keep them close can bring substantial comfort during the grieving process. As a tattoo artist, I've had the privilege of helping clients create memorial tattoos that hold a lot of emotional and spiritual significance for them.

Memorial tattoos are a beautiful way to keep the memory of a loved one alive and to carry their spirit with us wherever we go. They allow us to work through our grief and express our emotions, while also paying tribute to someone we loved deeply.

I was asked to do my first memorial portrait for C. and as nervous as I was, I knew in my heart that I could honour his father with my art. I edited the very old photograph I was given, as a high quality reference picture is the keystone of a well done realism tattoo: it can make or break the portrait. After cleaning it up and desaturating to greyscale, we were ready to start the tattoo process. I took my time, as I do with all tattoos. I am a perfectionist and I tattoo someone as I would want to be tattooed. I bring a lot of care and attention to every tattoo I create. My goal is to always bring beauty to the piece and he was beyond happy with the result. C. even asked me to do a realism portrait of his late mother shortly thereafter.

Beyond their sentimental value, memorial tattoos also serve as a reminder of the fragility of life. They acknowledge the reality of death and honour the idea that nothing lasts forever. By creating a permanently inked masterpiece of someone who has passed, we're reminded to make the most of the time we have left and cherish the people we love while they're still here.

Whether it's a portrait, a meaningful quote, or a symbol of remembrance, I can create a memorial tattoo that is deeply personal for you. A piece to remember their essence. A way to carry them always and keep their presence in your life.
